Soldier Of The Mist-Discuss-Detailed Summary

Questions

In Chapter one, who is the river god? There are several river gods in the Greek mythos. I found in wikipedia Asopus, whose river runs beside the battle site.

In Chapter Two, why has Latro now venerating the Swift God? is the Swift God Hermes?

Watch out for references to the battle of Thermopylae later on in the books; made famous in recent years by Frank Miller's comic 300 and it's movie adaptation. I've only read a small amount on the Greco-Persian wars but even that helped me to keep track of these books. I'd like to read about them in more depth and produce a historical time line for the soldier books one day; that's if you don't beat me to it. Crom 20100111

Thanks, Crom for the help and links. As I am writing these summaries just a bit after I read (and re-read) each chapter, some of the questions I have may be revealed in chapters I haven't read yet. So feel free to help me with background and links as you see fit. Also feel free to correct and add to my summaries. Even with the possibility of spoilers, I know this is the time to work on this, as I won't find the time to after I am finished with the book.Pokey 20100116

In Chapter Five, there is an inconsistency because Latro sometimes writes the days events before reading the scroll. He refers to Io as Hileinis' child, as that is what he presumed before reading the scroll. Also, in this chapter, is the serpent woman a Lamia (or the Lamia?)Pokey 20100125

  • Here is the O.E.D. definition. "A fabulous monster supposed to have the body of a woman, and to prey upon human beings and suck the blood of children. Also, a witch, she-demon." She is A Lamia, one of a species.

In Chapter Six, it is curious to me that the serpent woman refers to the Roman faun, instead of the Greek Satyr. Pokey 20100131

Who is the serpent woman anyway? I thought it was nailed down to a lamia (as above), but I have several candidates now,all with pros and cons.

  • a lamia lamia as discussed above (although I found there was both a monster lamia And a mythic figure Lamia
  • Scylla - description and parantage fits, but she should be between Sicily and Italy.
  • Echidna - description fits, but shew actually bore Heracles children. But she was made to live in a cave under a rock (re: ch nine)
  • maybe all these references are 'lamias'
